The Investors Group Athletic Centre was constructed for the 1999 Pan American Game, with construction beginning in late March 1997. The 70,000 square foot building, located just north of Max Bell Centre, features a fully retractable seating area for over 3,000 spectators, an athletic therapy unit, high quality acoustics, and many other attractions. As well as serving as the site of judo, wrestling and gymnastics competitions for the Pan American Games, the building serves as the permanent home of the Canadian National Basketball and volleyball teams, and as the site of University of Manitoba convocations. This building was the only new venue constructed for Winnipeg’s 1999 Pan American Games. This 4,000 seat sports hall was used to stage the basketball competition during the Games and is now the home of Canada’s men’s and women’s National Volleyball Teams.

This project was designed to maximize the spectator capacity of a Triple Gymnasium model. The challenges with seating in a triple gymnasium is the need to balance floor areas, spectator sightlines and seating access.
